a common challenge in the schedule of a fast track healthcare
project involving a major medical equipment purchase: the
healthcare project design schedule requires the equipment
specs, sometimes long before a physician is willing to
finalize the exact equipment he or she is buying
Why does the
architect need the equipment specs? To begin with, the size of
the room depends on the exact equipment selected. In
addition, all healthcare procedure rooms incorporating large
healthcare equipment require substantial engineering
infrastructure support. The room needs proper HVAC (heating,
ventilating and air conditioning), as well as electrical power
(regular and often emergency), plumbing, and structural
support (which could range from support of the floor below to
support of equipment from above to re-support of new openings
through the exterior wall for medical equipment entry and
eventual egress when the equipment is replaced down the road…”
